How/When  Did You Start This Company?

Before I founded Foster Web Marketing, I worked in sales and marketing in the software industry. I saw the growing marketing potential in web design and video, and I picked up design and coding as hobbies—just because I thought it was cool!  I started out solo, eventually founding the company in 1997 because I had so many clients coming in through friends, family, and past clients. I enjoyed the creative challenge of building websites, and I started building positive relationships with clients, mentors, and referral sources along the way.

I also met people like Ben Glass, who challenged me to do bigger and better things and connected me with top attorneys that also wanted to harness the power of the growing internet. As much as I love web design, I learned that content is king online. When I made education-based marketing a core part of my recommendations to clients, we saw measurable improvement in rankings and leads. When I created DSS to make it easier to maintain and update clients’ websites, and then shared that power with my clients and partners, the results were phenomenal.

I didn’t originally set out to build Foster Web Marketing into the thriving web marketing company it is 22 years later or build the talented team I work with every day. Instead, I got hooked on the feeling of helping somebody, seeing the end result, and knowing we assisted in making great things happen for someone, and it grew organically from there.

What Was The Trigger Point Which Happened To Start This Company?

The blossoming of the internet! I worked in the software business right at a time when the public was becoming aware of homepages, emails, and “surfing the Web.” I saw new possibilities online that seemed endless and exciting.

Beyond that, I saw that what I was doing was working for people, and I wanted to share that success with others. Seeing the rise of online technology also showed me the real difference between inventing and innovating. Nothing about the internet or websites was new; it was blowing up because someone decided to take something that was already done and make it better. I wanted to be the innovator in websites and marketing solutions for lawyers and doctors because I could see the possibilities.

What Is The Core Problem You Feel Many Of Your Ideal Clients Face In Their Business?

The core problem many of our clients face is not understanding the complexity of maintaining a website and marketing a business online. Our clients are largely lawyers and doctors, but the level of complexity in their work is something they don’t often bring to their marketing. We’ve talked with a lot of lawyers who want their marketing to “just work.” When we look into what they’re doing and why it isn’t working, we find out that their websites or strategies don’t cover what they need, or they are not following through on the routine things that need to happen after launch.

In some cases, they have been duped by companies promising “quick fixes” or unethical solutions and left to clean up the mess. We talk to a lot of professionals who are searching for the “magic purple pill” that will make their marketing successful overnight, but we know that it does not work that way. Instead, successful marketing takes constant focus, regular maintenance, and adaptability for the long term.

The reality is that marketing is a journey. You have to be willing to make incremental changes that will fuel your business and market it better over the long term.

Any Tips / Advice You Would Like To Share:

A “vanity website” may look great, but it will not bring you closer to the people you want to bring through your office doors. Whether you are designing a website or planning your marketing strategy, everything starts with the vision of your “perfect client” and your goals for your business.

Beware of any marketing company that “guarantees” generic, cure-all solutions, wants to cut you out of the planning, or keeps you in the dark about their methods. If you don’t understand your own goals or how to measure your progress, then you are just wasting money on a website that looks pretty.
