Not all our images are the exact dimensions that we need. So, did you ever try to make an image larger by resizing? This often leads to quality loss. When the image is enlarged, it looks blurred and unprofessional. Hence, it is essential to understand how to enlarge an image and how to resize it. The pixel information of an image changes if it is resized. For instance, an image will become smaller in Photoshop. Because the photo editor will delete any unnecessary pixel information (Photoshop).
When an image is enlarged, the photo editor must develop and add new pixel information based on its best estimations to meet the desired size. Unfortunately, this usually results in a pixelated or soft and blurry image.
This is why downsizing an image is easier than enlarging an image. Due to the difficulty of enlarging, make sure the image captured is of the best resolution and quality available. This is a basic need for high-quality (publication) or large-size (poster) printing.
Users recently asked if it was possible to enlarge a small image without quality loss. In this post, we’ll show you how to resize your images without losing quality and how to enlarge a picture without losing quality using photoshop.
But before we start, let us first understand what PPI and DPI are.
Digital images consist of dots called pixels. Enlarging the image increases the size and the resolution of these pixels. In low resolutions, it is common to take images, like 72 dpi. But these images will finally turn blurred when enlarged. So if you want a quality image to be printed, it must be at least 200 dpi resolution (dots-per-inch).
This can be achieved by setting your camera to take the highest-resolution pictures. Resize your image, free, with Paint, on most Windows OS operating computers. For more options and professional results, use a photo editing app.
It’s all about the quality.
Once upon a time, capturing photos worth enlarging required a high-end digital camera. Or a photo lab scanner to enlarge a photo print. But, in the age of the modern smartphone, cameras come with lenses that exceed 10 megapixels. As a result, any image from your camera has the potential to become a stunning Large Format Print. (As an example, the iPhone 11 has a 12-megapixel lens.)
The first step is to determine how far you can extend an image you adore. Dots per inch (DPI), or the number of dots printed in every inch of your image, is the deciding factor. The more dots there are, the clearer the image.

PPI and DPI
Although they have different meanings, these two acronyms are frequently used interchangeably.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch): Display resolution, or a number of pixels displayed in one inch of a digital image.
DPI (Dots Per Inch): Printer resolution, or the number of dots of ink on a printed picture.
What is the best DPI for printing?
We generally recommend 300 DPI for the highest quality photo prints. (This is what is sometimes referred to as a “giclée” print.) However, at 150 DPI or higher, most images will still look good and avoid pixelation. Simply put, don’t blow up photos to more than twice their maximum size at full quality. Anything less than 150 DPI will cause an editor to notify you that you’re uploading a low-resolution image.
It’s also worth noting that photos from your phone, Facebook, or Instagram are typically sized for the web at 72 DPI. Regardless of how good your smartphone camera is. Fortunately, this is a simple fix.
When images are enlarged, why do they lose quality?
The most used image format on the internet is a bitmap. Bitmap image files are all JPEG and PNG files. Thousands of pixels make up a bitmap image. If you zoom in close enough, you can see the pixels as squares.
The name Bitmap comes from the fact that each of these pixels is mapped to a specific position on the image.
To resize an image, most image editing software shrinks or enlarges these pixels. This is why there is no visible quality loss when resizing an image to a smaller size. The reason for this is that certain pixels become even less visible.
When you scale an image to make it larger, the enlarged pixels become more visible. This results in a hazy and pixelated image. As an example:
What Is The Solution?
The approach compensates for each enlarged pixel by adjusting its attributes to match its neighboring pixel. Fractal Interpolation, or simply Fractals, is the name given to this procedure. When an image is enlarged using this method, the effect is considerably better.
Is it possible to improve the quality of a low-resolution image?
Taking a fresh photograph or re-scanning your image at a higher resolution is the only option to resize a smaller shot into a larger, high-resolution image without highlighting poor image quality.
You can increase the resolution of a digital image file, but the image quality will suffer. Yet, there are various tools in Photoshop that can help you enhance resolution while maintaining visual quality.
What is the use of an Image Enlarger Tool?
An image enlarger software is a useful tool that helps individual and team photographers to enlarge images without sacrificing quality. There are several reasons why you would want to enlarge a photograph:
- First, large prints need source files with a higher resolution.
- For today’s standards, archival digital image files may be too small.
Whatever the cause, choosing an image enlarger that is precise in detail and sharpness is essential. Consider whether the photo enlarger increases the amount of noise or blur. Many of the free online image enlargers enlarge the image without improving its quality.

How to enlarge an image in JPG format?
A JPG, or JPEG, is a photo file type developed by the Joint Photo Group. Many digital cameras save JPG images. On many websites, web page designers use JPG files too. You can use your PC to print out or use a JPG file on your computer or your digital camera to enlarge it or use it as your desktop wallpaper.
Use image software to open your image file. The JPEG Committee proposed software like PaintShop Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Irfanview if you do not have image software.
Usually, in the image software bar, the “Resize” option is found in the “Edit Pictures” or “Picture” category.
The larger size can be entered by inches or pixels, or the size can be increased in proportion to the original picture. You may want to increase the size of the image by proportion if you don’t know what size you need the image.
Save your picture. When resizing to apply the changes, you need to select the “Resize” or “OK” button. Then save your picture to finish the JPG photo enlarging process.
Few Tips to go Bigger:
Tip 1: Try to upgrade the overall appearance of an image in Photoshop with the Camera Raw filter or sharpen the details of an image using the slider in the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom editing panel.
Tip 2: You’re focused to enlarge a digital image, but you can’t get the resolution you need at the size you want? Print the image at its maximum size at 300 DPI, then scan it. While it may appear counterintuitive, the scanner’s high resolution allows you to enlarge the image up to four times its original size.
You should now feel comfortable resizing images for yourself. While freeware applications are fantastic, they may not be powerful enough to maintain image quality for larger resizes. Instead, consider using a paid tool for larger projects or more ambitious image resizing.
